Struggling to get your art initiative off the ground? We’d love to help you develop a program you can be proud of while enjoying the process. Better yet, a program you will be able to sustain.
I worked with Virginia Lambert during my internship at the Sun Gallery in Hayward, CA, which Cal State East Bay provided. During my time at the gallery, I became familiar with Virginia’s art-based teaching program, which offered not only the typical basics of art, but a “story” alongside it. The kids learned the fundamentals of art and storytelling, with an emphasis on the origins of these elements and the artists who perfected them. Additionally, with the sponsored artists within the lesson, it gave the kids the ability to see the fundamentals through a modern and more diverse lens -a missing feature in many art-based lessons. The program’s structured foundation enabled a creative and engaging outcome, where kids learned while creating.
The storyboarding lesson curated by Virginia provided the kids with an excellent opportunity to think critically about the act of storytelling and its endless possibilities. The kids were eager to start creating their stories, each with their unique characters and plot lines, which they depicted through a series of storyboards. As a video and animation major, the act of storytelling and storyboarding comes naturally to me, as l’ve always enjoyed creating my own little worlds. It was incredibly endearing to see the excitement on the kids’ faces as they learned and developed, reminding me of my younger self. During this lesson plan, I also had the amazing opportunity, thanks to Virginia, to teach the kids about storyboarding from my college perspective. I offered them books and visual examples of how storyboards operate in the animation and media-based world. Overall, the week’s lesson was not only exciting for the kids, but also for me, and it really opened my eyes to the joy of teaching.
